Santa Marta was the first favela in Rio de Janeiro to open to visitors, and it sits on a hillside in Botafogo with one of the widest views in the city. You go up by the community funicular and walk back down through the alleys with a guide who lives the place, stopping at the main viewpoints and hearing the history of the community from the people who built it.
The tour lasts about two hours and runs every day, preferably in the morning, with an afternoon option. Guides work in Portuguese, Spanish and English. Round-trip transport is included, and we meet at Rua São Clemente 320, in Botafogo.
